Bay area hardcore punks Brigata Vendetta make a welcome return following their debut release This Is How Democracy Dies (LTW review) in early 2024
Having picked up a copy of This Is How Democracy Dies upon release I was delighted to get to see Brigata Vendetta live at the 2025 Rebellion Festival, they delivered a blistering set, a set that amplified the energy within the album to new levels, and certainly won the band a core set of fans on this side of the Atlantic.
Since the album release a lot has happened, particularly within the band’s homeland of the US; Trump has waged an internal war via his ICE storm tropers on anyone who doesn’t resemble a prep boy, he upset the global economy via his tariff scheme, he has bombed targets in Iraq, Nigeria, Somalia, Venezuela (and abducted the countries leader), and as of now he is a couple of months into a war with Iran that is wreaking havoc across the worlds trade systems and in turn its economies. Its this background that has prepared the ground for The Disease And The Cure, an eight track mini-LP/EP courtesy of Pirates Press Records; its worth mentioning, the vinyl is limited to just 500 copies and comes on single sided green & black splatter vinyl, the reverse of which is (appropriately) silkscreened with a blind-folded Statue of Liberty.
Title track The Disease and The Cure kicks of proceedings with some savage ripped chords, a rallying call to action, the explosive lyrics are spat out as the rhythm section fuels the circle pit, its immediately clear Brigata Vendetta have elevated the sound to new heights; Killing Me begins with a dialled down pace before literally exploding with gasped vocal refrains, before dropping back; there is some great grinding guitar work forming the foundation to this one; I Can’t Breathe has (sadly) become a familiar tag, the track itself verves between pummelling mayhem and a slowed chorus allowing vocalist Darrel Wojick to deliver the title with appropriate venom.
Moderns Sins, the longest track on here at a mere 2min 14sec leans back into the darkness evident throughout Democracy, yet brings a new and welcome level of rage, there are traces of the UK82 scene, its lean, hard hitting, with guttural vocals, the track deals with “this upside down world we are living in” states Wojick, adding “this shit is all by design… because it benefits the elite” that vitriol is driven by a great guitar solo but at no time do the band forget the hook line, Corporate Control is in the same vein, raw punk rock – it’s definitely hard, but still manages to retain a melodic edge rather than just being an overblown rage.
The Disease and The Cure reflects the intensity of the band’s live performance, on this album they have taken the events surrounding them, the world in a constant state of crisis and replied with fury launching a petrol bomb at the door of those responsible.
