Dublin’s fierce one-man punk outfit Meryl Streek has announced his third studio album, Stories They Don’t Teach You At School, set for release on 9th October via Venn Records. To mark the announcement, Streek has unleashed the lead single “Rotten Fruit”, featuring a guest appearance from punk royalty Steve Ignorant of CRASS alongside TROM.
The single addresses media control, the numbing onslaught of fake news across modern screens, and the constant stream of fear emitting from daily outlets. The accompanying music video reflects feelings of lost hope and being overwhelmed by negativity while questioning the choices of world leaders. Ignorant remarked that the album delivers what politicians do not: the truth.
The album tackles the harsh realities of living in modern Ireland, focusing on themes such as depression, addiction, homelessness, and the cost of living. Hard-hitting tracks like “Council Estates” direct attention to governments failing the working class, while “Kelly” explores the case of Kelly Lynch, a young woman whose family continues to contest the official cause of her death using independent forensic reports.
Musically, Streek has expanded his sound by inviting various artists, speakers, and comedians into the fold. The record includes contributions from Pete Holidai of The Radiators From Space, comedian Phil Jupitus, and Gallows guitarist Laurent “Lags” Barnard. It closes with a three-minute spoken word piece from viral sensation Frankie McNamara, known for his series Meditations for the Anxious Mind.
