There’s a particular kind of dread that runs through the work of Uncle Acid and the Deadbeats, a slow, creeping unease that feels at once timeless and painfully contemporary. On the band’s new album, Shapes of Midnight (out September 18), that dread becomes fully weaponised: a twisted gothic vision of power, class, and paranoia that feels like Edgar Allan Poe dragged into the age of 24-hour news, billionaire bunkers, and endless crisis. Photo credit: Karin Hunt When I sit down withKevin Starrs, the elusive architect behind Uncle Acid’s warped psych/prog universe, he’s midway through a long day of press and…
“I am more than just one thing.” That one line neatly captures whyIrene Shapesfeels so vital in alternative music right now. She’s an audio engineer, composer, vocalist, multi‑instrumentalist, producer and sound designer, moving between underground stages and studio consoles with ease. She’s also someone who has had to fight for space in male‑dominated scenes and technical environments, while refusing every label that tries to pin her down. Across our conversation, Irene talks candidly aboutmusic technology, creative risk, andsurviving in independent music, with a mixture of warmth, realism and stubborn optimism. Beyond Tech and Creativity Early on, I ask if she sees…
They were forming chords from tapping beer bottles, tearing newspapers for a rhythm, letting off aerosol cans for a hi-hat: Was Pink Floyds attempt to make an album from found sounds just a delaying tactic?
When The Dark Side Of The Moon became an international hit in 1973, Pink Floyd’s career path changed for ever. They shut the door on their early experimental era, and locked behind it was an intriguing concept album they’d been working on since 1970. Only a few minute of Household Objects survive to hint at what could have been, as Prog reported in 2016.Pink Floyd’s 1975 album Wish You Were Here is filled with sounds easily missed by even the most dedicated listener. Jazz virtuoso Stéphane Grappelli plays faint violin on the title track, and the refrain from Floyd’s 1967…
Twenty-five years after The Be Good Tanyas introduced their singular take on folk music to the world, the celebrated Vancouver group has announced a special 25th anniversary edition of their debut album, Blue Horse, arriving November 20th, 2026, via Birthday Cake Records. The album previously had a very limited vinyl run, and this new edition features archival photos and a new introduction from the group. The album can be pre-ordered here.Originally independently released in Canada before finding an international audience in 2001 via Nettwerk Records, Blue Horse introduced The Be Good Tanyas’ intimate, unvarnished combination of traditional folk, deep country,…
Ethan Jodziewicz photoBehind the Songs: Maya de Vitry – “All My Faith”If you arrive atAll My Faithlooking for something that sounds like Gillian Welch, you might find your thirst briefly satiated by No Time to Rush, the final track on Maya de Vitry’s 2026 release, but it’s only a slight parallel. The song is melancholic yet enchanting. But this record plants her feet firmly in the alt-country camp with sparks of thoughtful ‘70s folk rather than lingering in the purgatory of a folk-pop singer. There’s a common thread running through this record of being willing to name the painful and…
The bond between Evanescence and their followers is a sacred one. It’s a shame, then, that some people have tried to undermine that covenant in recent days, sharing footage from the band’s show at Manchester’s Co-Op Live to illustrate, apparently, a rather muted audience response. Putting aside the fact that the footage was a few seconds from a 105-minute, 22-song set, and robbed of any context whatsoever, there’s something distasteful about commenting on the way others should enjoy a gig. The truth is, though, adulation doesn’t always mean expelling energy, and volume isn’t necessarily a gauge of level of fandom.…
The Beatles share alternate take of Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown) ahead of Rubber Soul reissue – UNCUT
The Beatles have unveiled a previously unheard alternate take of “Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown)”. Released today by UMG and Apple Corps Ltd., “Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown) (Second Version – Take 2)” features on the forthcoming expanded edition of the band’s 1965 album Rubber Soul, due on October 2. The first version of what was then called ‘This Bird Has Flown’ was recorded during the first day of sessions for Rubber Soul and featured George Harrison’s new discovery, the sitar. The band were not happy with this version, so nine days later they taped three more performances.…

Directed by: Joscha BongardWritten by: Joscha Bongard, Nicole RüthersStarring: Maja Bons, Bea Brocks, Liliom LewaldBabystar is a German film directed by Joscha Bongard that feels eerily familiar in 2026. It’s a film that strips back the pretence and façade of a social media influencer family and examines the alienation caused by late-stage capitalism. It follows the teenage daughter, Nunki (Maja Bons) with her mother, Stella (Bea Brocks) being a make-up influencer and father, Chris (Liliom Lewald) being a fitness influencer. It’s a family dynamic that anyone who has spent an evening doomscrolling social media will immediately recognise and relate to. But…
