“When Syd Barrett retreated from public life, his creative life didn’t stop,” notes Neil Jones, co-organiser of a celebration of Barrett’s 80th birthday taking place across his Cambridge hometown in October. Alongside rare original Barrett artworks, an exhibition will bring together prints of photos of his later paintings – the only way to see them as Barrett routinely destroyed his work. These include brightly coloured abstracts, still lifes and impressionistic scenes, fragile relics of a determinedly private post-Floyd existence. The exhibition will also include photographs by Barrett’s friend and one-time flatmate, Mick Rock. “Destroyed artworks? It’s all part of the…

The cover artwork of Billy Strings’ fifth album is a sort of collage scattered across nine gilt windows. Each is filled with found objects, most of which look sourced from an attic or one of those bric-a-brac stores occasionally if inexplicably found along the side of American freeways – the hands of a mannequin, one of them yo-yoing what looks like a Christmas tree bauble, a deer skull inside a picture frame, a mismatched pair of glass shoes, among other surreal tableaux. In the middle, Strings is photographed strumming a guitar, his left leg in plaster. Just above him hovers…

Growing up, I loved to watch the television show The Monkees, though looking back, I figure I wasn’t watching the episodes as they first aired, but re-runs. There were only two series of the show, though this amounted to some 58 episodes (32 in Season 1, 26 in Season 2), originally broadcast between 1966 and 1968. Fascinatingly, for some of the re-runs, original songs were replaced by then-current singles or album tracks, a move not without logic, given the television shows were aimed at being vehicles to promote records. When I happened upon the video that is the subject of this…

The night at Paradise at [UNVRS] was honestly amazing from start to finish. The venue itself was incredibly impressive, with a huge amount of space to move around and dance without ever feeling too crowded. There was a real sense of energy throughout the night, and the layout of the venue made it easy to get completely immersed in the atmosphere. For us, though, the visuals were definitely the highlight of the whole experience. They were some of the best we have ever experienced at any club. The production was on another level, with the visuals transforming the entire space…

Dublin-based project Gravité Fresq is back with their new dark pop single, “Hypocrisy Loop”. It is absolutely stunning, with nostalgic synthwave moments that remind me of the 1980s scene, and even the production values on this sound rather analogue in places, giving it that extra nostalgic bite….Gravité Fresq channel the analogue glow of the 1980s into an addictive slice of dark pop.I also loved the vocals on this, reminding me a lot of Pet Shop Boys in places, but with even more direct tones. The groove and drumbeat on this is really addictive, and it shows that this band is steering…
