Best/Favourite Christopher Nolan FilmChristopher Nolan has become one of the defining filmmakers of the 21st century, with a filmography marked by critical acclaim, major box office success and lasting cultural influence. His work is now instantly recognisable for its non-linear narratives, themes of memory, identity and time, striking practical effects, vast sense of scale, intense scores and protagonists consumed by a singular obsession. These qualities have made Nolan a brand in his own right, a status reinforced by Oppenheimer’s box office performance and The Odyssey’s historic IMAX run, with screenings reportedly sold out around the world until September. The Odyssey…
Americana UK’s Ian Rothery caught up with Waylon Payne via Zoom at his home in Nashville on one of the few days of the year when it might actually have been hotter in the UK than in Tennessee. Payne has just released his third album, Wayward, and the fact that it’s only his third in a 22-year recording career is a story in itself. Payne comes across as relaxed and affable. He’s clearly enjoying having a new record out, and he was very happy to discuss the making of this album and also talk about his not-so-easy journey to where…
Directed: Kanhaiya TrivediThis 16 minute short film is made of two love letters to the best city in the world. With deep love, 2 international students describe their feelings for London and how it has shaped the people they are becoming. Both the spoken testimony and the filmic record of Yours Faithfully leave the viewer with no doubt that London heightens the senses.’Trust’, ‘euphoria’ and ‘zest for life’ are some of the words chosen to describe the city and its electric energy.’There will always be something for you’, says one of our ‘letter writers’ over long takes of iconic locations such as…
Harbinger (2026)Written by: Harry Boxley, Simon CluettStarring: Peter Woodward, Jeanine Nerissa Sothcott, Nick NevernFilm Review by: Holly BakerHarbinger (2026) is a thrilling, feature-length supernatural horror film. The film is directed by experienced horror writer and director James Crow. Crow has exclusively worked within this gory genre, with previous works such as the Christmas scarer Nightmare on 34th Street (2023) and the folk horror/mystery thriller Curse of the Witching Tree (2015) gaining a fair amount of traction and critical praise. Harbinger continues his legacy, with a gripping original story and striking visuals, and fresh, talented faces, adding marvellously to the continuously…
There are certain casting announcements that instantly grab your attention and demand space on your calendar. When you pair two absolute titans of screen acting together in a pressure-cooker genre piece, anticipation levels inevitably hit the roof. That is precisely why audiences (and I) are counting down the weeks until writer and director Padraic McKinley’s acclaimed feature debut, The Weight, arrives in UK and Irish cinemas on Friday, October 2nd, courtesy of Vertical.Ethan Hawke is a performer of immense versatility, but he has always held a special place in cinematic hearts for his sheer intensity. His blistering, Oscar-nominated turn opposite…
As a father of two young children, my home is an ongoing battleground between maintaining a shred of cultural sanity and surrendering to the hypnotic pull of toddler entertainment. Over the years, I have patiently endured endless hours of talking animals, singing tractors, and secondary animated characters with questionable accents. But there is one absolute titan of pre-school programming that strikes pure, unadulterated dread into my soul: CoComelon. For the uninitiated (you don’t know how lucky you are), CoComelonis not merely a show. It is an unrelenting, hyper-vibrant sensory assault featuring giant-headed, pastel-coloured toddlers singing nursery rhymes on an endless, auto-tuned…
There are few feelings more frustrating for a dedicated film enthusiast than watching a cinematic juggernaut tear through the global box office while stuck firmly on the sidelines. As someone who has been an unapologetic admirer of Spider-Man in all his big-screen guises, from the excellent Tobey Maguire era through Andrew Garfield’s underrated tenure to Tom Holland’s perfect landing in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, I find myself without that tingling feeling, as I still haven’t seen Spider-Man: Brand New Day!While I am itching to see how Destin Daniel Cretton handles Peter Parker’s post-memory-wipe solitude, I have had to content myself…
There is something inherently cinematic about the River Thames. Flowing through the heart of London and stretching out toward the vast expanse of the estuary, its waters have borne witness to centuries of history, commerce, and human drama. For indie filmmakers, water has always provided a rich backdrop for storytelling, offering mood, movement, and a sense of timeless grandeur (Jaws, Life of Pi etc). That is why I am genuinely thrilled to highlight a wonderful initiative taking place this year: the Tidal Thames Film Competition 2026.Organised by the Port of London Authority, this fantastic initiative is designed to empower, enable,…
When Sony and Marvel Studios struck their historic deal back in 2015 to bring Spider-Man into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, fandom was collectively holding its breath. We had already seen two distinct live-action iterations of the web-slinger in quick succession, and the prospect of yet another reboot felt, to some, like a dangerous exercise in brand saturation. Enter Tom Holland: a young British actor equipped with gymnast-level agility, an infectious boyish charm, and the terrifying task of stepping into boots previously worn by Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield. We love the animated Spidey but we are only talking live-action here, sorry.Fast…
Arriving at the Rhyl Little Theatre on Friday, the excitement was building for Rhyller Thriller 4. This year’s weekend of celebrating horror films and filmmaking started off at 12 p.m., with the first few shorts starting at 1 p.m. The opening film from Mycho Films, titled Pethau Bychain (Little Things), starring Asher Chan, was a great opening with creepiness and a rather unexpected jump at the end. The following films in the shorts included NO SCRUMPING, DISPOSABLE, GOD SQUAD, and SUBMERGED. After a short break at 2 p.m., we went back into the films with two Welsh classic horrors: Gwaed…
There is a distinct, prickly sensation that washes over a film editor when the entire internet appears to be spinning a vast web of enthusiasm for a movie he has not yet had the privilege to watch. As someone who has unashamedly championed Tom Holland’s tenure as Peter Parker, from his wide-eyed debut in Civil War right through to the multiversal heartbreak of No Way Home, I am currently caught in a sticky situation. My calendar has conspired against me, keeping me glued to my desk while audiences and critics nationwide rush to cinemas to witness Spider-Man: Brand New Day.…
Mel Hudson’s Richard Ashcroft Revived My Libido is ostensibly a show about sex, but in reality it’s about something far more interesting: what happens when women reach midlife and take the opportunity to rediscover themselves. Hudson speaks directly to women in their forties, fifties and sixties who may be wondering where their libido went, and whether they even want it back. With warmth and wit, she dismantles the idea that libido is simply about sex. Instead, she celebrates it as a life force – the spark that fuels creativity, curiosity, confidence and joie de vivre. The show’s premise: a Richard…
