Photo by Jon UleisThe Americana UK archives are not exactly rammed with Sufjan Stevens content. Andrew Frolish selected the sublime John Wayne Gacy, Jr. for his Chain Gang feature in 2022 (here). Otherwise, there are a few ‘guest appearance’ or ‘produced by’ mentions and the odd ‘reminiscent of’ comparison—and that’s about it. However, one can’t help but admire the ambition and creativity of this multifaceted multi-instrumentalist with a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing. So figuring out the reason for this paucity of AUK appearances could prove to be “a difficult pancake”, as the members of Flann O’Brien’s constabulary…

Wandering songwriter returns with first album in a decade: lessons in melodic self-definition ensue.“I don’t plan, and I don’t plan to stop”. The opening line to the first and title track of My Mother’s Name may offer the listener a glimpse into the singer-songwriter’s manifesto, and could go some way to summarising her peripatetic lifestyle. Born into the indigenous Inuk population of Greenland but a citizen of the world, Nielsen has chosen not to settle anywhere for too long, the itinerant aesthetic lending grease to the wheels of her music. Along the way, she’s been a band leader, a film…

Lee Clayton died on June 12, 2023, on the day he was due to start work on his first album in 30 years, his death barely mentioned anywhere. Who was he? “There’s only one country singer who has influenced me and that’s Lee Clayton,” Bono told an interviewer in the late ’80s, so he knew; one of the few. Otherwise, Clayton’s life and career were attended by not much more than obscurity, his lonely death in a motel room in White House, a small Tennessee town 20 miles north of Nashville, the sad conclusion to a musical life that had…

LA based multidisciplinary artist Dani Offline introduces her debut album Lover’s Discourse, a lush 12 track exploration of love, romance and emotional complexity wrapped in the warmth of ’70s soul, jazz and contemporary R&B.Inspired by the Quiet Storm radio Dani grew up listening to in D.C. and Roland Barthes’ 1978 book A Lover’s Discourse, the record began life through diary entries and musical improvisations. Co-produced alongside longtime collaborator Vooo, its primarily analogue, sample-free production gives tracks such as ‘weary soul’, ‘ouch!’ and ‘2 weeks notice’ a rich vintage character, while the infectious ‘reasons’ and buoyant ‘icarus’ bring a lighter, more…

Ahead of her third studio album Mud, Remi Wolf shares one of its most vulnerable moments with new single “I Won’t Cry”.Tender, yearning and increasingly dramatic, the track finds Wolf wrestling with the aftermath of a former love, beginning in restrained territory before building towards a heart-wrenching crescendo. Her powerhouse vocals carry the emotion as she asks the painful question, “Why don’t you want me back?”Written during one of the earliest sessions for Mud in Big Bear, Wolf says the song immediately felt special. “It’s sad and yearning and dramatic and kind of pathetic in a way that I really…

An analogue, funky, live experience that truly lifts the soul.It would be a stretch to call Live On 29th Street an Americana album in the truest sense of the term; however, if three superb musicians from Austin, Texas, at the very pinnacle of their powers, thoroughly enjoying themselves, are up your alley, then this is something well worth checking out.Greyhounds have been together since 1999 and consist of Anthony Farrell on keyboards and guitarist Andrew Trube.
