Tottenham’s own Shocka returns with Conscious Grime 2, a project that does exactly what the title promises, merging sharp grime production with substance, growth and purpose. Hailing from Broadwater Farm, Shocka has always balanced uplifting messages with real life perspective, but here he fully locks into a lane that feels both fresh and necessary.
Built largely alongside producer Stretch, the EP pairs gritty, bass heavy grime sonics with mature reflections, creating music that speaks to listeners who grew up with the genre but now want more depth from it. Shocka’s mission is clear: bring grime back to those who drifted away from its more immature themes, while still keeping it exciting for a younger audience.
The features are strong throughout, with names like Maxwell D, Frisco, Big Narstie, Big Zuu, Bruzaand Roachee adding weight without overshadowing the vision. Standout moments include the celebratory energy of “Pioneers” (produced byNutty P), the swaggering “Confidence”, and the hard hitting “Don’t Bring Me Back” and “ZOO”.
Conscious Grime 2 is more than an EP, it’s proof grime can evolve without losing its edge. Shocka delivers music with meaning, showing growth in both sound and message.
Cop Conscious Grime 2 here.
Shocka sat down with Wordplay Magazine to answer our infamous 10 Questions:
1. So tell me, how did it all begin? What sparked your love for music?
I always loved music, my mums tells this funny story that I used to call Bob Marley, God Marley. I actually got a tattoo of his face on my shoulder now I’m older, but I’ve always loved music especially with substance but seeing Heartless Crew live was the game changer, I was like this is what I wanna be and do.
2. Who are some artists that influence you and that you want to work with in the future?
So many artist influenced mein the last couple months, I’ve been blessed to work with nearly all my hero’s, only a couple left that I need to tick off the list from the grime scene, and that’s Kano, Wiley, Dizzy and D Double E.
Outside the UK, it’s Kendrick Lamar, Cole and Drake.
3.What projects do you have coming up and can you give us any info on them?
Project I got coming up is a series called “CONSCIOUS GRIME” I’m currently about to drop Conscious Grime 2 this Friday 1st May. It’s a classic.
4. How would you describe your sound?
I describe my sound as conscious but grimey the messages are really positive, uplifting and inspirational, but it has a balance, I also give you the other side of life, heart breaks, death and pain.
The sound of the beats are grimey, so it complements the conscious message and gives it a raw feel, if it didn’t, it might sound a bit too happy hahaha.
5. What’s your proudest moment to date so far as an artist?
My proudest moment as an artist to date might be this Shocka Sunday run I’ve been doing every week with different artists, I feel like a kid again, I’m having so much fun.
For those that don’t know, I drop a new song and new video every Sunday, some have features, some it’s just me, and the response has been incredible.
