Deeply human songs with indie sensibilities and shades of bluegrass. This is Lorelei is the moniker used by singer-songwriter Nate Amos. He’s also in the experimental, indie pop band Water from Your Eyes, where he plays guitar and produces music alongside Rachel Brown. He’s a prolific chap with hundreds of songs on Bandcamp, and The Singer in My Band is far removed from his work with Water from Your Eyes. Clear influences include Elliott Smith, English folk music and bluegrass, thanks to his banjo-playing father, Bob, who’s a respected figure in the New England bluegrass scene.Amos is always working. In the…
Steve Forbert photographed in Nashville, TN September 21, 2016©Jay BlakesbergSteve Forbert arrived on the music scene in 1978 fully formed and alive with youthful energy and attitude. Fast forward nearly fifty years and he continues to make music that is consistently relevant and enjoyable. Touted as one of the new Dylans, his career may have been destined to follow a specific trajectory. Instead, he chose to do things on his own terms resulting in a steady flow of top-tier releases highlighted by his ever-present tunefulness and some sharply honed storytelling. Most importantly, he has never compromised on the type of…
He teases a riff so the crowd know what’s about to happen before initiating the by-now standard call and response for Seek & Destroy. As he does, the hazy orange behind the band – way too big to be called a backdrop, more an apocalyptic sky – gives way to a garage door opening to show a modest practice space within, presumably modelled after the one Metallica had in their very early days. The scene is in black and white, symbolising that past, and soon shifts to navigating the surrounding run-down city streets, the 20,000-strong crowd travelling with the band…
At the beginning of the 90s, the Manic Street Preachers stated that they would make only one album, that it would sell 10 million copies, and that the band would then split up, their agenda complete. And in the end, nothing could have been further from the truth.Generation Terrorists, the Manics’ debut album, was not the huge success the band had predicted: it sold only 250,000 copies. Today, the band is still active, albeit minus one of the four founding members that created Generation Terrorists and the two albums that followed. On February 1, 1995, guitarist and lyricist Richey Edwards disappeared…
EVE.L, a bold UK-based artist originating from England, is back – and if you like the sound of Grimes and early Charli XCX, this is for you…. an explosive, Coachella-ready pop fusion blending Grimes-esque vocals with tropical and K-pop influences into a high-energy anthem. The sounds on offer are a unique blend, with the genres on show going all the way from tropical pop to K-pop and basically everything in between. Vocally it is very much reminiscent of Grimes, as I mentioned earlier, but the production values on this sound like it’s been written to be performed on the biggest stage…

Tom Cruise’s divisive new movie, Digger, is the subject of much talk – not all of it good. But it’s not the first time he’s attracted a critical pile-on. Fourteen years ago, he donned a flowing wig to star as fictional singer Stacee Jaxx in the much-reviled hair metal musical Rock Of Ages, adapted from a more successful stage play. In 2012, when the film came out, Classic Rock spoke to the people behind this misfire to find out how Hollywod’s biggest movie star ended up singing Def Leppard songs. A crisp March night in London’s West End, and things…
